Lent Series: 40 days to End Violence Against Women: Week 2

February 23, 2010

Subject: This week’s Lenten video

Dear Friends,

It has been one week since the start of Lent and the official beginning of this study course – Cries of Anguish, Stories of Hope: A Lenten Study on the worldwide struggle to end Violence Against Women! http://women.overcomingviolence.org/

This week we are focusing on women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. You can use the online resources as they suit you best – on your own, or with a group from your church or area. We suggest you watch the film first – we found the discussion with police and soldiers mirrored beliefs in our own society. This film is beautiful. http://women.overcomingviolence.org/

We also have a Bible Study, discussion questions, an interactive reflection page and prayers that relate to the video. There are still four films to come, to correspond with the remaining four weeks of Lent. You can use any or all of these for your Lenten Study, as aids to reflection and learning.

We have provided some links to local support services, in case you or someone in your group finds this study raises issues for them which require professional support.

During this time of reflection and introspection we pray that our videos and studies will be a starting point for you. Thank you for sharing this time with us.

This study has been designed by the World Council of Churches, the World Student Christian Federation and the World YWCA. We look forward to accompanying you during your Lenten journey.

Here are a couple facts about the Democratic Republic of the Congo:

There are only 250 miles of paved roadway in the Democratic Republic of Congo – a country which is the same size as Western Europe.

The DRC contains the world’s largest supply of coltan – a mineral essential for manufacturing mobile phones. It is likely that, without knowing it, many of us carry a small piece of DRC everywhere with us.

You can also read the brand new reflection that Dr. Fulata Mbano-Moyo wrote this week. She’s the author of this week’s Bible Study and the Programme Executive for Women at the World Council of Churches.

I hope the study is useful to you during this Lenten season.
