This seminar focuses on questions of theodicy and suffering from African-American theological and philosophical perspectives. How do black religious perspectives theorize theodicy, human suffering and evil? How have black religious and philosophical thinkers reconciled evil with a God of “absolute goodness” found within monotheistic traditions? Do theological and philosophical concepts of God as essentially good get in the way of our ability to talk about human suffering and evil? Might black humanism or black atheism provide better ways of addressing theodicy, suffering and evil? Within black religious thought, why must God triumph over evil and how does this relate to redemptive suffering? These are a few questions that these lectures will attempt to address. Because suffering is an inevitable part of the human condition, these lectures will spell out both the limitations and possibilities of black religious thought in relation to questions of theodicy and suffering.
