Current Brite professor Steve Sprinkle, paid tribute to Leo. “He was my friend of over 25 years. Leo was Professor of Hebrew Bible, Dean, and then the first President of Brite Divinity School. Upon his retirement, he was voted Professor Emeritus of Hebrew Bible. He was an amazingly prolific and highly respected scholar, and in the estimate of many of his peers, the finest scholar of Hebrew Wisdom literature in the English language of his generation. In my experience, he possessed the keenest ethical sense of any administrator in theological higher education. He advocated for women, racial/ethnic minorities, and LGBTQ people, and changed the course of the divinity school for the better. Leo had courage. He was a complicated man with a large and generous heart. More than anyone else, he encouraged and promoted my academic career. I shall miss him greatly. Leo is survived by his children: Nicole, Hayden, and Jill, their spouses, and by his grandchildren. Rest peacefully, old friend.”
